Samodiva

Following the trail of an old Bulgarian legend, ethnology students Veselin and Doriana find themselves at the isolated home of Baba Ginka, where everything they believed about good and evil is irrevocably overturned.

Based on a story by Vladimir Vasilev

While searching for information for their thesis, Veselin and Doriana, ethnology students, find themselves at the home of Baba Ginka, a lonely elderly woman who has preserved the mystique of Bulgarian folklore in her mind. When reality and fantasy begin to blur, and mythological folklore figures become real, Veselin is confronted with the question of whether the threat to his life lurks behind the beautiful faces of the Samodivi, or whether the true monster is simply a person consumed by his own grief, ready to do anything to quell it.

Short – 2026

Veselin and Doriana, two entomology students, set out on a journey in search of material for their thesis, “Samodivas – Myth or Reality?” Their research leads them to the home of Grandma Ginka, an elderly woman who lives completely alone, isolated from the outside world. She welcomes them warmly and satisfies their curiosity about the legends surrounding the mythical beauties.

As the conversation unfolds, time slips away, and night falls over the silent village. The old woman firmly forbids the young pair from traveling after dark, and they reluctantly agree to spend the night at her house.

Dazed by Grandma Ginka’s herbal tea and influenced by the stories of the Samodivas, Veselin begins to lose his grip on the boundary between reality and fantasy. Bizarre visions, shifting landscapes, and strange encounters at the village fountain are only some of the unsettling experiences that follow. On the edge of sleep, the devilish maidens awaken Veselin and lure him into their magical dance through the nighttime forest. Enchanted by their beauty and hypnotized by their song, he chases after them in a frenzied pursuit that ends in tragedy.

Unable to resist the seductive apparitions, Veselin falls into the Samodivas’ trap and is struck blind. He awakens screaming in his room, only to discover that he truly cannot see. To his horror, his hand is tied to the bedframe, and his fellow student, Doriana, has vanished without a trace.

In reality, Grandma Ginka—driven to madness by her overwhelming loneliness and the absence of her son—has drugged the young man with secret herbal concoctions before deliberately blinding him. Hoping to keep him by her side and fill the void left by her grief, she imprisons him in a desperate attempt to overcome her solitude.
